National School Choice Week (NSCW) informs, inspires, and empowers parents to discover the K-12 education options available for their children, including traditional public, public charter, public magnet, online, private, and homeschooling.
Will Estrada, senior counsel for Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), says out of all the options school choice provides, homeschooling is his favorite.
"With the growth of homeschooling post pandemic, it's really been incredible to just see where we've come from," he tells AFN. "Homeschooling used to be illegal; as far back as 1994, homeschool parents in Michigan and in Texas were facing prison time – and look how far we've come."
When the Supreme Court ruled in Pierce v. Society of Sisters nearly 100 years ago that a child is not a mere creature of the state, he says that "strengthened and built the foundation of parental rights to where it is today."
"So, marking the 100th year anniversary, and, of course, marking school choice week, there's really nothing that speaks to school choice better than parents deciding to homeschool their children," the attorney submits.
As HSLDA celebrates National School Choice Week, Estrada says it will continue working to advance school choice and parental rights in all 50 states.
