Young American’s Foundation, the conservative youth organization, has been sponsoring the “9/11 Never Forget Project” on college and university campuses going back to 2003. Over that time, students have placed more than 14 million American flags to remember the terrorist attack and to honor its 2,997 victims, says YAF spokesman Nick Baker.
“We just need to make sure that students are aware of what happened, and the radical Islamic ideology behind what happened, and ensuring that those lives are remembered,” he tells AFN.
On the anniversary day, participants typically plant the U.S. flags and hold a campus-wide moment of silence at 9:11 a.m. Some events host a speaker, too.
The public might be surprised to learn the 9/11 ceremony is not welcomed on many campuses, which are famously dominated by far-left ideology.
A flag display at Washington University, in St. Louis, was thrown in a trash bag by an angry member of the student government last year. That student, identified as Fadel Alkilani, later claimed he was protesting “American imperialism.”
A memorial display at Michigan State University was vandalized last year as well.
YAF has a sign-up page on its website to participate in the event which is now two weeks away.
