On a recent episode of American Family Radio (AFR)'s “The Stand Radio” program, AFA staff writer and pastor Matthew White discussed his research into the history of Halloween and how believers can use Scripture to guide their convictions.
White noted that popular modern perceptions of the holiday’s origins are often misunderstood.
“The truth is that Halloween — at least as we know it today, as it’s celebrated today in this country — really it was a gradual blending of some pagan religious practices along with religious practices within Christendom,” White explained. “All these things kind of combined over time to give us what we have today.”
While ancient festivals like Samhain are historically real, White pointed out that much of what is assumed about how they were celebrated actually stems from centuries-later folklore.
“The festival itself is historically verifiable. It happened. No historian denies that Samhain was a real festival. Where it begins to come under scrutiny, or there are questions about it, is how exactly it was celebrated,” White stated. “The reality is that there is no source material, contemporaneous source material, that explains exactly how Samhain was celebrated.”
When deciding how Christian families should respond today, White emphasized that personal convictions shouldn’t rely on shaky historical folklore, but rather on the unchanging Word of God.
“My take on it is that regardless of origins — you can sort of set origins aside. The way we respond to anything — our convictions should not be shaped, especially in this case, by shaky origin stories or folklore,” White said. “Our convictions are always to be based on what is sure, and that is the foundation of God’s word. We can always base our convictions on that and know we are standing on very solid ground.”
White concluded that believers should filter any activity through clear biblical boundaries, avoiding anything associated with darkness and evil.
