The criminal trial has exposed how Clancy choked and killed her three children, ages 5, 3, and 8 months old, in the basement of their Massachusetts home.
When then-husband Patrick Clancy came home, after running errands, he found his wife on the ground, crippled, after she jumped through a window. When paramedics arrived, a 911 call picked up the father’s horrific screams from inside the home when he began looking for them only to find them dead.
Rather than claim she is innocent, Lindsay Clancy’s defense team does not dispute the killings. Instead, defense attorneys are using a state statute known as lack of criminal responsibility, better known as an insanity defense, based on claims of postpartum psychosis and other serious mental illness.
It is that defense strategy – asking the jurors to sympathize with a struggling and overwhelmed wife and mother – that is the likely reason for the deadlocked jury.
Outside the jury room, it is also why a small army of pink-clad supporters – mostly women – have attended the trial and are defending the defendant.
“It’s unfortunate that a tragic incident like this has to happen in order for people to come together, and rally, and show support,” one woman told The New York Post. “So I feel for her.”
In a TikTok video, another supporter spoke directly to the defendant.
“I want you to know that I believe you,” the supporter stated. “I believe that you were over-functioning throughout your entire postpartum period. I am blown away by how hard you were working.”
Bethany Miller, a spokeswoman for National Religious Broadcasters, has been following the Clancy trial and the many woman who are sympathetic to Lindsay Clancy’s mental state.
Miller told American Family News women are created by God to be naturally empathetic and caring.
“Of course, in the world we live in, in our fleshly state, I can be weaponized and manipulated,” she warned.
It is those same emotions that are driving the Lindsay Clancy supporters, Miller said, and that are also overcoming reason and logic.
“And it’s compelling. It’s attaching through narrative and social media angles,” she said. “And women are responding to it tenfold."
Clancy supporters are also blaming the ex-husband, Patrick. Some women are accusing him of being an uncaring spouse whose apathy – or even spousal abuse – led to Lindsay Clancy’s crime.
“While we're talking about her husband, we saw his lackluster attempts at support,” one supporter complained in a social media post.
Beyond just defending the defendant, some Lindsay Clancy supporters have also concluded Patrick Clancy himself murdered the three children.
“All right, he did it. Patrick did it,” Lisa Rina, an actress and talk show host, stated in a TikTok video.
Despite the defendant herself admitting to the crime, and despite the possibility of a defamation lawsuit, Rinna has not backtracked or apologized. Instead, she said her own therapist agrees with her conclusion.
