Since the early 2000s, college graduates have been more likely to side with the Democratic party. According to Campus Reform, a major shift in the mid-2000s was due to educational attainment becoming closely tied with partisan identity.
Now, today’s graduates are not just voting Democrat, but they account for 80% of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). This trend can be attributed to tuition and student debt ballooning, the value of a college degree declining and weaker job prospects.
Nick E. Smith, a democratic strategist, claims that young American’s politics are not shaped as much by campus culture but rather economic pressure, which could be the appeal for socialism. However, that doesn’t account for the close ties between educational attainment and Democratic support, especially since these voters are noted to come from different income brackets.
It's no secret that leftist ideologies have taken hold of college campuses across America. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) has caused political ideology to be spread to all majors across campus, even those that don't deal with politics, like math and science.
Gregory Lyakhov, the New York correspondent for Campus Reform behind the article, says that political bias is not the only thing to blame when it comes to why Democrats do so well with the modern-day college graduate.
“We have seen that, in the 1992 election, college graduates were more likely to become Republican and vote for Republicans than Democrats. So, this has not been constant, and to critics that say that this is just because of political bias, I mean, it's not,” Lyakhov says. “We have always seen universities be left leaning, but students have not always picked up on that.”
Since many universities and professors endorse Democratic candidates, specifically those that align with the anti-American ideas of the DSA, Lyakhov says that it leads to more college graduates voting for liberal candidates.
“The result is that they're voting for socialists. So, I think we're already seeing the results of this flawed education system, in which progressive bias is taking over,” Lyakhov states.
