The wife of California’s governor is getting ripped by critics for public comments that are wacky, weird, creepy, and authoritarian, such as warning that Evangelicals are holding back progress, and vowing to protect her sons from right-wing viewpoints.

Since her husband Gavin Newsom is expected to run for the White House in 2028, that is likely the reason past comments from Jennifer Newsom – a potential First Lady in 2029 – are circulating on social media.

And her comments are a doozy, too.

In one bizarre clip, from 2016, Newsom reveals how she accidentally ran over her sister with a golf cart as a child, killing her. She tells the audience how she used that incident to sympathize with inmates she met at San Quentin. They were assured by her what they had done to end up there was probably the result of an accident, too.

On the “Washington Watch” program, Washington Stand writer Suzanne Bowdey said a comment that stood out to her is Mrs. Newsom calling social media companies a “force for good” if they hide topics and debates that she, Newsom, thinks are bad.

What might sound like a parent demanding better regulation online, Bowdey said, is really a liberal mother wanting censorship of unwanted ideas.

In the clip, from a San Francisco children's summit in 2024, Newsom said her “progressive household” is trying to keep objectionable content from reaching inside the home.

One example of that "progressive" view is Mrs. Newsom's own title as wife of the governor: She prefers to be called Gov. Newsom's "first partner" rather than "first lady."

The "scary" example she gave is when one of her sons saw Andrew Tate, the controversial British kickboxer, on TV and knew who he is.

That “alarmed” both parents, she said, who are trying to “institutionalize our values” that are obviously a liberal worldview.

“That's the only way the Left wins a debate,” Bowdey warned. “In this instance, they don't even want to have a debate.”

In fact, in the clip Newsom complains that boys who are online are often pulled to the right politically. That pull to the right, she warns, could send them down a “rabbit hole” of what she calls “limiting narratives” from conservative sources.

What is an example of that dangerous limiting narratives? “What it means to be a boy and what it means to be a girl,” she said, referring to basic biology and chromosomes.

Newsom also bragged two years ago there is legislation in the California legislature that would authorize the State of California to crack down on “scary” content. Her husband has now signed several bills to do that.
