An 11-year-old child the court is referring to as DW went on a multi-day trip to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. with her fifth-grade class.
The sleeping arrangements were supposed to include four girls to a room with two beds, but unbeknownst to DW, the child assigned to share a bed with her was actually a boy pretending to be a girl. Alliance Defending Freedom is representing DW via her parents in a lawsuit against Jefferson County School District (Jeffco).
Walker Wildmon, a vice president with American Family Association, says this is the transgender problem on steroids.
“Yeah, what makes this lawsuit unique is that it has to do with actual sleeping arrangements. It's a little kind of more consequential, if you will, than is a dude going to be on the basketball court with my daughter?”
The school district tried to hide the arrangements from the parents, continued to insist that the boy be housed with other girls without their knowledge and is still persisting with the policy.
“This policy by this school district hasn't been refuted. I mean, even in their response to the lawsuit, they never refuted the fact that this was a policy to allow boys to bunk with girls on these field trips.”
Jeffco previously had language in its policy that promised "reasonable accommodation" for students seeking privacy, but this language was removed in July 2024. Wildmon says even if the language was still in the policy, it would need to be changed.
“There's talk of accommodation. Really, we don't need accommodation in this arena. We just need boys to do boys things and girls to do girls things.”
