Americans still have reasons to be patriotic on the 4th of July

Today, we celebrate the 249th birthday of the United States of America.

Even amidst controversy, there are some reasons to be proud of the country, AFN reports.

The lyrics to God Bless the USA begins by saying, “If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my life… Id’ thank my lucky stars to be livin’ here today.”

Lee Greenwood's classic American anthem may seem quaint or outdated to some, but on this 4th of July, it may be the best antidote to the chorus of malcontents one hears online or in the news who want to dwell on America's faults.

In fact, according to historian David Barton, it's those faults – and how we have overcome them – that make America unique among all the countries in all of history.

“We have blemishes, but we got out of those blemishes faster than every other nation in the world, and that was because we were more connected to the Bible than every other nation in the world,” Barton says.

He mentions that America is special to be celebrating 249 years.

“The average length of a country in the history of the world has been 17 years. So, we are special, and I'm really proud of them,” Barton explains.

Ronald Reagan paid tribute to America, a shining city on a hill, as he was leaving office some 40 years ago.

“After 200 years, two centuries, she still stands strong and true on the granite ridge, and her glow has held steady no matter what storm,” Reagan stated.

There have been plenty of storms even since Reagan rode off into the sunset, but his parting words are as true now as they were then.

“She's still a beacon, still a magnet for all who must have freedom, for all the pilgrims from all the lost places who are hurtling through the darkness toward home,” he said.

Americans should remember to be proud of their country, that is the land of the free and the home of the brave.

As God Bless the USA says, “’Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land. God bless the USA.”
