The ballot measure voters will see Nov. 5 is known as Amendment 3. If it receives enough "yes" votes, adults 21 and older can legally possess up to three ounces of marijuana.
A "no" vote opposes legalizing marijuana for adult use in Florida.
"Smoking and using marijuana is not safe at all," Luke Niforatos, of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, tells AFN. "That is a lie that's out there from an industry that's trying to sell products."
Pointing to the tobacco industry, Niforatos says that industry knowingly lied about the dangerous products they were selling to the public. He sees the marijuana industry doing the same thing.
Asked about the argument that people will do it anyway, Niforatos says that’s true but it obviously doesn’t compare to legalizing it.
"60% of Americans use alcohol and about 30% of Americans use tobacco. Those are our two legal vice drugs,” he says. “Marijuana use right now, for people using on a regular basis, is under 10% of the American population."
According to Niforatos, all other illegal drugs are a fraction of our population as well and should also remain less prevalent to harm people.
