Christian singer Mandisa has passed away. Her representative released a statement asking for prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during an incredibly difficult time. JJ Jasper, morning host on American Family Radio, says the news is stunning.
"I think the Christian community is in shock," he shares. "Mandisa, only 47 years old – and it's just so sudden."
Christian music fans were first introduced to Mandisa, whose full name was Mandisa Lynn Hundley, on Season 5 of the hit series "American Idol," where she made the top ten, finishing ninth. Jasper says her music was inspirational, but not as much as Mandisa herself.
"Her songs are more like an anthem – but her love and her joy were bigger than her music," he states. "Such a big smile, a big personality; so full of joy … and our hearts certainly go out to the family."
Mandisa was nominated for five Grammys, wining in 2014 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album with her release of "Overcomer."
No cause of death has been released, but the K-LOVE announcement said "Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us."
Mandisa spoke openly about her struggles with depression, releasing a memoir entitled "Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy" in 2022 that detailed her experiences with severe depression, weight-related challenges, the coronavirus pandemic and her faith.
"This is one more clarion call for people to get help if you're struggling in any way," Jasper adds.
