"Replacement theology" is the belief that the modern Christian Church has replaced Israel when it comes to the promises and covenants God made with His chosen people in the Old Testament.
Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills is among the many Christians who reject this view, arguing that God’s covenant with Israel remains ongoing. He recently told American Family Radio that believing replacement theology requires ignoring the plain teachings of Scripture.
"When people today say that replacement theology is the way to go, they are fulfilling what was warned about in Scripture, that there are those who claim to know God, but they deny the power thereof," Pastor Hibbs quoted from 2 Timothy 3:5.
He told Jenna Ellis that it is also antisemitic.
"We're living in an age right now where people conveniently name the name of Christ, say that they're Christians, and then say that God is done with Israel," he observed.
The pastor went on to note the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis 12, God's promise to make Abraham a great and blessed nation. Hibbs argued that to say God has abandoned His promise is "literally an incredible offense" to His character.
"It's ridiculous," he told Ellis, likening it to throwing away the Bible.
Hibbs also proudly called himself a Zionist "because the God of the Bible is a Zionist."
"He said that He's going to establish the throne of David in the city of Zion," the pastor noted.
That promise of an eternal throne is made to David in 2 Samuel 7, and Scripture clearly places that throne in Zion/Jerusalem in Psalm 132 and Psalm 2.
