Left 'overplayed' their hand – and Evangelicals took notice

As they did in 2020, Evangelicals turned out again to support Donald Trump in the 2024 election – and that greatly pleases a group that worked tirelessly to get believers to the polls last week.

According to an NBC exit poll, white born-again and evangelical Christians made up 27% of the electorate last week – and roughly 4 out of 5 (82%) voted for Trump. Four years ago, that voting bloc made up 28% of the electorate, and 76% backed Trump.

Debbie Wuthnow is president of iVoterGuide.com. She says the tens of thousands of hours she and her team put into their work over the last year paid off.

"The thing that encourages me more is not only that they turned out, but that they voted for Trump. [Those who] more frequently attend church voted even more strongly for President Trump," she tells AFN.

Wuthnow acknowledges concern had been expressed over how many evangelicals would turn out since the abortion issue went to the states. But she contends the Left didn't know when to stop being evil.

"It was the transing of our kids, the economy, and how well they're able to provide for their families [that drove evangelicals to vote] – and I think the Left overplayed their hand. That's what opened the eyes of some of the Hispanic, the black voters," she adds.

But the iVoterGuide leader points out Trump has drifted a little bit to the left on abortion and has never really been a supporter of biblical sexuality.

"We're going to have to really hold him to the fire where the abortion and pro-life issues are concerned. He's kind of softened on that a bit. So, our job is not done."
