Given what is going on across the nation, National Day of Prayer Task Force President Kathy Branzell recently told "Washington Watch" this year's theme is a timely one.
"Our neighborhoods are getting darker, our schools are getting darker, our nation is getting darker. Darkness is the absence of light," she pointed out.
"We have to remember that scripture tells us, God tells us we have been removed from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of light (Colossians 1:13)," Branzell continued. "Jesus said we are the light of the world, the salt and the light (Matthew 5:13-14), and His word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). We can run into whatever the circumstances are for the day."
Every year, local, state, and federal observances are held from sunrise in Maine to sunset in Hawaii, uniting Americans from all socio-economic, political, and ethnic backgrounds in prayer for the nation.
Tens of thousands of gatherings are planned for tomorrow, and millions are expected to assemble at state capitols, county court houses, on the steps of city halls, in schools, businesses, churches, and homes to pray together. Anyone looking to join an established gathering can find one nearest to them on the National Day of Prayer website.
Also found there are specific reasons and ways to pray for America.
"I'll be so excited to see what May 3rd looks like on Friday, after those millions of people have lifted up the Word of God and prayed for our neighbors and our nation and God's heart and hand is moved," Branzell anticipates.
