America Reads the Bible was organized by Bunni Pounds, founder and president of Christians Engaged. As American Family News recently reported, she got the idea while touring the Museum of the Bible two years ago.
"I thought it would be awesome if our national leaders from all spheres of influence, all demographics and denominations, would humble themselves in front of the American people and let them know that their wisdom, their peace, their joy, their fortitude comes from going to God every day in His Word," Pounds recently told American Family Radio (AFR).
The event – which will run from April 18-25 at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C – also comes as the nation gears up for its 250th birthday.
"Franklin Graham's doing our welcome, and he's doing a gospel presentation at the end of the book of Revelation," Pounds relayed. "He's also reading the Samaritan story in Luke 10."
Other readers include film director and television writer Dallas Jenkins, singers Colton Dixon and Danny Gokey, as well as actresses Patricia Heaton and Candace Cameron Bure.
"We have eight or nine cabinet members, 20 members of Congress, six or seven governors, farmers, police officers, single moms, [and] hospice care chaplains," Pounds detailed. "It really is America Reads the Bible."
Dr. Alex McFarland, host of "Exploring the Word" on AFR, is also among the more than 500 readers.
"It really is an amazing moment, and it's just been an honor to see the Church come together," said Pounds.
A livestream will be available for those who cannot attend the event in person.
