Hosted by Christians Engaged, America Reads the Bible is scheduled for April 18-25 at the Museum of the Bible.
Bunni Pounds, president and founder of Christians Engaged and visionary of the event, recently told American Family Radio (AFR) that she got the idea two years ago while touring the museum.
"It hit me that this is the problem with the modern American Church," said Pounds. "We don't know who we are because we're not reading our Bibles. We are spending all our time binge-watching Netflix and Amazon Prime."
"Wouldn't it be awesome if our national leaders — from all spheres of influence, all demographics, and all denominations — would humble themselves in front of the American people and say, 'We need the Bible every day just to make it as high-performing leaders,' and, 'We're calling you back to daily Bible reading and discipleship for the well-being of our country and to raise up the next generation of leaders for our country to steward our nation well,'" she posed.
Over the course of one week, leaders and everyday citizens alike will participate in a public reading of the entire Bible, bringing together voices from government, education, business, the arts, and the Church.
Pounds wants believers to remember that the Bible truly has the answer for individual life, for their families, their churches, and their communities. This initiative invites Americans from every background to return to the spiritual foundation that has shaped the country: God's word.
"Let God touch your life and for you to see that He speaks through every portion of scripture," she said. "It's going to be an amazing time."
Nearly 500 Christian leaders, ministry partners, and public figures are lined up to read throughout the week, and worship leaders will be facilitating prayer and worship at the end of each hour. Anyone who cannot physically attend is encouraged to join via livestream.
