Gallup recently reported that the past year saw a 16% gain in dissatisfaction with America's position on abortion. The analytics and advisory company highlights that 26% of U.S. adults are satisfied with abortion policies and 69% are dissatisfied. 46% of Americans want less strict laws -- a gain of 16 percentage points since January 2022 -- and 15% of U.S. adults are dissatisfied and want more strict laws.
Dr. Michael New of the Charlotte Lozier Institute says the media is spinning it to make the case that U.S. adults want to end the lives of more preborn children, but other polling data does not support that push.
"The Knights of Columbus released a poll through Marist a few weeks ago, and they found a lot of stability in public opinion on abortion," Dr. New relays. "They actually found a two-percentage point gain in the percent of people identifying as pro-life since June 2022 and a six-percentage point gain in the percentage of people opposing the use of tax dollars for abortion since January of 2022."
He also points out that the Gallup Poll asked questions about national abortion policy rather than states' abortion policies, which likely skewed the results.
"I think a lot more people are happy with state policy because conservative states can now protect preborn children, and those laws actually poll pretty well in a lot of southern states," the pro-life researcher explains. "This past election cycle, we saw a lot of pro-life governors win re-election by big margins. These include Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia, Governor Greg Abbot of Texas, Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio, and Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida."
All four governors signed strong pro-life measures into law and ran as strong pro-life candidates. So even though media coverage of sanctity-of-life issues has become even more biased since the Dobbs decision, Dr. New urges pro-lifers to take heart as they continue to make progress in protecting the lives of preborn children.
