Judge involved in January 6 cases criticizes Trump pardons

WASHINGTON — One of the judges involved in trying cases for those charged in the January 6, 2021 protest at the U.S. Capitol has criticized President Donald Trump's pardons for most of those already sentenced or accused.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said evidence of the event is preserved through the “neutral lens” of riot videos, trial transcripts, jury verdicts and judicial opinions.

"Those records are immutable and represent the truth, no matter how the events of January 6 are described by those charged or their allies,” she wrote.

Kollar-Kotelly is no stranger to dealing with cases involving those with conservative views.

On October 30, 2017, Kollar-Kotelly blocked the enforcement of President Trump's ban on transgenders serving in the military.

And in May of last year, Kollar-Kotelly sentenced Lauren Handy to more than 4 years in prison for blocking access to an abortion clinic.

A few weeks later, Kollar-Kotelly sentenced 75-year old Paula Harlow to two years in prison for her part in a pro-life demonstration outside an abortion clinic. Despite an appeal from Harlow's husband for leniency based on his wife's declining health, Koller-Kotelly responded that Harlow " make every effort to remain alive, to do the things that you need to do to survive, because that's part of the tenets of your religion."
