Gov. Greg Abbott is being praised after he directed state lawmakers to include an abortion pill measure during an upcoming 30-day special legislative session. That session begins Monday, July 21.
Kim Schwartz, of Texas Right to Life, says the special session included several agenda items Gov. Abbott supports but one item missing was bringing back the Woman and Child Protection Act. That measure, SB 2880, failed during the regular session. It would crack down on dangerous mail-order abortion pills if signed into law.
Gov. Abbott announced July 9 he was including the abortion pill measure among 18 agenda items.
Schwartz confides the Texas governor added the pro-life bill after 130 organizations, including Texas Right to Life, signed their names to a letter urging Abbott to bring the Woman and Child Protection Act back up for a vote.
Those organizations included American Family Association, the parent organization of American Family News.
"They have a second chance to stop illegal abortion pills in Texas,” Schwartz tells AFN. “But we only have a short window as there's only 30 days to get this measure past the finish line.”
