The country has endured heavy rain for several months. But late last month, the downpours intensified, wiping out infrastructure and farms and killing more than 1,500 people.
"Our people are saying things like the flood situation right now, the problem is maybe 5%," relays K.P. Yohannan of GFA World. "95% of the suffering crisis will be in the next months and maybe some years to come, because people have lost everything."
He notes that 230 million people have been affected as 1/3rd of the country is under water. Experts say it may take six months for the water to recede.
In the midst of the crisis, Yohannan's heart goes out especially to the children, many of whom lost their parents.
"That is my big concern," he tells AFN. "Think about the kids that lost everything -- school books and pen and pencil and clothes and everything."
GFA World is already on the ground providing food, water, other necessities, and hope in the name of Jesus to as many people as possible. Yohannan says the situation is unprecedented, and he is calling on Christians worldwide to pray.
