Planned Parenthood, the ACLU of Colorado, and an abortion fund called Cobalt have operated under the umbrella of Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom and reportedly gathered enough signatures to place the issue on this fall's ballot.
Marcie Little of Coloradans for the Protection of Women and Children says abortion up to birth is already legal in the state, but the amendment's proponents want to change the state constitution to recognize the false right to abortion and to prevent the state and local governments from passing laws to protect preborn children in the future.
"They want it in the constitution so that we can't change state statutes, we can't revise them to try to roll back what's already legal," Little explains. "They see this as their kind of final frontier, their final move to fully enshrine it in the constitution."
Pro-lifers, however, plan to use every platform available to convince people to vote against it in November.
"The goal is to expose how radical and extreme they are … that this is too crazy for Colorado," says Little.
The amendment, if passed, will also force taxpayers to foot the bill for abortions.
